WITNESSING TO MORMONS-PART 2by Jim Robertson, Executive DirectorAs many of you have attempted to share the gospel message with a Mormon, you have learned that you probably had little effect. Anything you say goes right over their head. The reason is that most of the time you're using the wrong approach. We would normally try to share the gospel message with them the same way you would talk to any other nonbeliever. Instead, we need to be using their own material. For example, if you go to a Mormon, you want to share the message of Christ and His Word, the Bible. However he says he already has Christ, so why should he talk to you? And he says he already has the Bible, and in fact, he has three other books of scripture (Doctrine & Covenants, Pearl of Great Price and the Book of Mormon) which means that he has more scripture than you do. So if you continue in this manner, he will completely turn off to anything you say. In these Witness to Mormons articles, I am pointing out two basic methods of planting the seeds of doubt in your Mormon friends, neighbors and relatives. Last month we told you about applying the test of a prophet to Joseph Smith as found in Deut.18:20-22. In essence, it says that it would only take one false prophesy to make a false prophet. We have just finished putting together a book containing 54 false prophesies Smith gave, many which are dated so the Mormon can't say it hasn't happened yet, thus proving beyond any doubt that he was a false prophet. In this month's article we want to test the Book of Mormon to see if it comes from God. Joseph Smith said that the Book of Mormon is the "fullness of the everlasting gospel" (Doctrine & Covenants 27:5 and 135:3). Even Mormons will admit that "fullness" means complete and "everlasting" means forever and ever. So now we want to test this out. Challenge the Mormon to find the very basics of their teachings in the Book of Mormon, such as temple marriage for eternity; baptism of the dead; God was once an ordinary man who lived on another planet, who worked hard enough to be promoted as the god of this world; he has a body of flesh and bones and is not a spirit; this god was selected by a council of gods; he had a father, who had a father, etc.; he is married to millions of wives and has billions of children; and he is eternally progressing to become a smarter and more knowledgeable god; and Mormon men can also progress to become a god of their own planet. Ask them to show you in the Book of Mormon where it teaches that Jesus is the brother of Lucifer; that Jesus was not born of a virgin because Mary was married to god before she married Joseph and that's how she became pregnant with Jesus; that Jesus is also progressing and someday he will be able to become a god of his own planet; that Jesus is also married to several women and has many children; and the blood of Jesus does not wash away all of our sins. And there are many other teachings of the LDS church that cannot be found in the Book of Mormon. If the Book of Mormon is the "fullness of the everlasting gospel" or complete gospel forever and ever, we should be able to find any of the teachings in the "most correct book on earth." Some Mormons might respond that latter-day revelation has changed this, but we have to remind them that Joseph Smith said it was the "everlasting gospel." That means it can't be changed, unless they want to admit that Joseph Smith was a liar. We also need to ask the question, if the Book of Mormon is the most correct book on the earth and it is the fullness of the everlasting gospel, why was it necessary to write the Doctrine & Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price? You see, this is the trademark of a cult; constantly having to add or change the history, the doctrines, their various holy books and their teachings. Isn't it wonderful that God's word doesn't change and is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow? And to know that we can trust it in its entirety? I hope all of you will join us in prayer, that the Mormons world wide would come to understand the saving grace of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. And understand that we don't need three more books that override the Bible; that we don't need to do good works to gain salvation; that we don't have to provide salvation through baptism of the dead for those who have died; that we don't have prophets that bring us new revelations or who can change or add to God's word, the Holy Bible. God bless all of you who join us in this prayer.
