Other LDS Ceremonies

While the endowment ceremony is normally the focus of discussions regarding LDS temples, there are other ceremonies that bear mentioning. These ceremonies are as follows.

  • Temple Marriage: A temple marriage is said to last for time and all eternity, unlike a worldly marriage which ends at death.
  • Sealing Children to Parents: Mormonism claims that children must be sealed to their parents in order to be a family in heaven. This takes place in the temple.
  • Baptism for the Dead: Baptisms performed by proxy (in place of) those who are dead. Patrons are baptized and confirmed (given the Holy Spirit) using the names of those who are dead.
  • Washing the Feet: Modeled after the example of Jesus in John 13:4-10. Little is know of this ordinance. What documentation exists on it shows that is usually performed by LDS general authorities.
  • Second Anointing: The most sacred (and secret) of the LDS temple ceremonies. This ceremony is normally performed by the president of the LDS Church and bestows guaranteed salvation and godhood on it’s receiver.

All of the ceremonies performed in the LDS temples can be done by proxy for those who are already dead. Most faithful temple Mormons spend countless hours researching their family tree. They do this in order to perform temple work for their dead relatives. They are taught that this will allow their deceased family to be saved in the afterlife.
