How Well Does The Average Person Do?From Moses to Jesus the scriptures record 1400 years of man failure to obey the law
God says of His
own people through the prophet Jeremiah: "Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging place of wayfaring men; that I might leave my people, and go from them! for they be all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men. And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies: but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, saith the LORD." - Jeremiah 9:2,3 Jeremiah speaks of God's chosen people the Jews who became progressively wicked. Similarly, Paul addresses the Gentiles in the same manner who also did not know God and became progressively wicked. "And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; (ought not be done). Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenant-breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:" - Romans 1:28-31 These were the charges made by God to both Jew and Gentile in the ancient world, have things changed? How well do we do? Let's look at a few of the commandments: People today are lovers of self, convenience, possessions, and hobbies. For most people, time for God is squeezed in on Sunday or holidays. God is rarely discussed or brought up throughout the week, and time alone with Him in prayer and Bible reading is squeezed out as other personal matters take precedence. It seems the only time God is mentioned in daily affairs for many people is when His name is taken as an expletive. Has it ever occurred to us that when we use God's name in place of a four letter cuss word, we are in essence reducing the name of the glorious God to the equivalent level of that vile 4 letter word?!! What does this say about our true opinion of God? As we saw in the commandments in the previous section, Jesus said that harboring anger towards another person is a violation of this command. It doesn't take a genius to see that anger and hatred is ruling the hearts of many people today. Consider the rise in divorce, lawsuits, racism, road-rage, child abuse and violent crime throughout the world today.
Lust is part of what it means to be an American these days…If this weren't so, our television sets wouldn't be so full of sexually explicit commercials, sitcoms, soap operas, and talk shows. Sex sells in America like never before. Jesus never said it was ok to "look but not touch". He said that "whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." - Matthew 5:28 It probably wouldn't be overstating it to say that we each break these laws thousands if not millions of times in our lifetime. Should it not seriously concern us to know that God is going to hold us eternally accountable for the offenses we commit? While not being known for his encouraging words, the Prophet Jeremiah supplies an explanation for why we all fail to observe God's commandments. He states: "The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked: who can know it?" - Jeremiah 17:9
