What Is The Greatest Thing Jesus Ever Did?

"And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross." - Colossians 2:13,14

1. The Laws and ordinances of God that are continually broken on our behalf qualify us to face His terrible wrath. God who is rich in love and mercy, took Jesus, His own sinless Son, and sent Him to the cross in our place; God poured out His awful wrath on Him. In doing so, the broken Laws and ordinances of God that condemned me were nailed to the cross. My infinite debt of sin to God, forever removed by Jesus' willful sacrifice made on my behalf.

2. Those that were crucified had their crime listed on a board nailed above their heads so all could see why they were being put to death.

- Jesus had committed no crime according to the Roman Governor (John 19:4), so instead, in mockery, they hung a sign reading "...This is Jesus the King of the Jews" - Matthew 27:37

- But unknown to the Romans and all who witnessed His execution, God had placed an invisible list above Jesus' head. It was an enormous list of sins that had been committed. It was a list of every law and ordinance broken by God's children, past, present, and future.

"For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:" - Ephesians 2:14-16

"My God, my God why hast thou forsaken me?" - Matthew 27:46

3. Jesus cries out in rejection as He bears in his body God's punishment for ALL the sin of God's children! God was now pouring out the fullness of His wrath on His beloved Son. For the first time, God the Father looked at His Son, and rejected Him- because He saw in judgment all the filthiness of sin- for every commandment I had broken, Jesus was suffering. As Jesus breathed His last, he spoke the words:

"It is finished" - John 19:30.

4. These final three words uttered by Jesus are a translation of the single Greek word "Tetelastai". The reason Jesus spoke this word is because it was the word placed on the Roman stamp of payment. It was used in Roman society to indicate that a debt had been paid in full, a financial debt or even when a criminal debt was served in jail. Jesus' last words were literally
"PAID IN FULL!!"

He paid in full my debt of sin that I could never ever pay not through my good intentions, not by good works, and not through attempts to be obedient to certain laws and ordinances. This enormous debt of sin was paid in full in His body on the cross.

The greatest thing Jesus ever did for you was to endure God's righteous judgment on your behalf so that you could become a child of God. Because of Jesus, I now can hope with certainty that I possess all the benefits that come with being a child of the King.

How much more could God
possibly demonstrate that He loves us?!

"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." - Romans 5:8

And not only did Jesus die for our sins, but as proof that God accepted His sacrifice as payment for our sin, Jesus rose from the dead.

"For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures; And that He was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:" - 1 Corinthians 15:3,4
